Some of you may not know this, but I am a pretty big fan of The Magicians on the SyFy network. Of course I am also a fan of the books. If you have yet to try out either the book or show, I highly suggest it. I consider it a magical fantasy with a wonderful splash of adult Harry Potter. Though…give the show a chance, it took me until about episode four of the first season to truly sink its teeth in me.

So this past week I had the wonderful opportunity to join the amazing geeky girls of the Geek Girl Brunch for the Miami chapter’s “The Magicians” themed picnic at The Barnacle Park in Coral Gables. If you don’t know who or what the Geek Girl Brunch is, make sure you check out their website and see if you can find a chapter near you. A very short and totally understated summary would be a monthly gathering of amazing geeky women paired with food and wine (or whatever your adult beverage choice is).

I had been planning my cosplay outfit since last month when they announced the theme. Considering that my closet has a pretty impressive shade of Elliot, I knew I was going to be the High King himself…though it was probably the worst idea, considering the fact it was EXTREMELY HOT that afternoon. We live in Miami; I know…it’s always hot. But this was…this was just something completely abnormal (but what’s climate change?). So, the choice to wear tight black pants, boots, a button down, a vest and a tie was probably not the best choice. I was not however, going to let that stop me. Our fellow podcast host Kenny dressed up as Ember and of course brought with him little cakes, lol. Then my beautiful wife paired me perfect as a red version of Margo, or Bambi as I proceeded to call her for the rest of the afternoon.
Since the event was a picnic it was done potluck style. So, there was all kinds of delicious foods. Though, I didn’t bring an item of food but in true Elliot fashion I brought the party. I rolled in with a cooler filled with Jell-o shots (which unfortunately eventually melted in the extreme heat...did I mention it was extremely hot?). While there was food there I think I only had about 2 or 3 bites and decided I would be better off keeping myself hydrated with beer, Jell-o shots and mimosas. I think I win.
This is now the second Geek Girl Brunch Miami event that I have attended. The first was themed Lord of the Rings, and I always have a fantastic time. Be sure to look for a chapter near you and register! If you are in the Miami area, I suggest registering ASAP as their next theme is the 90’s and will be held at Lincoln's Beard Brewery. Spots fly fast, so register, set an alarm, set 5 alarms, have your friends set alarms for you, contact a buddy and make sure that they RSVP for two, just in case! It’s worth it I promise.
